As mis- and disinformation continues to spread, influencing discourse and policy, the role of fact-checkers is as important as its ever been. And with the rapid improvement of artificial intelligence, the need for and expertise of fact-checkers will likely continue to grow.

Specifically created for participants in the “Fact-Checking Capacity Building for Canadian Journalists” program, funded by the Google News Initiative, this course serves as both a corequisite for the eight online workshops and a prerequisite to apply for six-month mentorship directly from the International Fact-Checking Network. This self-directed course will help participants explore the basics of fact-checking, from what is fact-checkable to how to find claims to tools to help reporters adjudicate veracity.

This course is fully asynchronous and can be completed at your own pace. It is estimated to take 2 to 3 hours to complete.

This course is open to everyone but is specifically targeted to those participating in the Fact-Checking Capacity Building for Canadian Journalists program, funded by the Google News Initiative. No special software is required, though we do recommend students complete the course on a laptop or desktop computer.
