MediaWise and AARP Present Voting Resources for Florida Residents
How to Get MediaWise for the Midterms
EVENT DATE: Oct. 27 2022
LOCATION: In-person at The Poynter Institute
TIME: 11:30 a.m.-3 p.m.
TICKETS: Free.
With the 2022 midterm elections right around the corner, it’s important that voters like you get the facts you need to make informed decisions before heading to the polls.
MediaWise, the digital media literacy initiative of the nonprofit Poynter Institute, has teamed up with AARP to empower citizens with media literacy tips and voting resources. This event — designed for Tampa Bay community members 50 years and older — features a complimentary catered luncheon at the Poynter Institute and a conversation with Jeff Johnson, AARP Florida State Director, about voting procedures.
After lunch, you’ll be treated to an interactive program led by MediaWise Director Alex Mahadevan. This session will teach you how to spot false or misleading social media posts, videos and images; what algorithms are and how they work; and show you tools that professional journalists and fact-checkers use to fight for truth and democracy. PolitiFact Managing Editor Katie Sanders will conclude the event with a summary of election issues to watch out for — and the opportunity to ask a fact-checker anything.
Attendees will also have the opportunity to contribute to research about misinformation — and earn $50 — during voluntary focus groups led by the Stanford Social Media Lab following the event.
You’ll leave the Institute feeling prepared and confident that when you cast your vote Nov. 8, you’ll have access to the facts you need to make informed decisions with confidence.
For those unable to attend in person, a stream of the MediaWise training and PolitiFact Q&A will be available. Click here to register for the free livestream program.
