WASHINGTON, D.C. (March 15, 2023) — Poynter and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting are pleased to announce that applications are now open for the Public Media Editorial Integrity and Leadership Program.
This nine-month fellowship, funded by CPB and developed and administered by Poynter, will train two cohorts of fellows — 25 in each group. The program’s goal is to develop a coalition of public media news leaders who understand the importance of acting with integrity, and who are committed to strengthening the field through mentorship and collaboration.
Selected participants will attend a one-week, in-person training at Poynter in St. Petersburg, Florida, in September before convening online over the course of the next several months for workshops, peer group meetings and one-on-one coaching sessions.
The first iteration of the program, also funded by CPB, trained 100 public media newsroom leaders in 2019 and 2020 at Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication.
“Skilled, effective editors are vital to ensure the editorial integrity, rigor and relevance of public media journalism,” said Kathy Merritt, CPB’s senior vice president of journalism, radio and community service grant services. “Today, newsrooms are at the front lines of helping the public navigate broad societal challenges, including online polarization and active disinformation efforts.”
This program builds on CPB’s longtime commitment to ensure trust in public media, Poynter leaders said.
“Public media is a crucial element in the news landscape and continues to expand its scope, reach and impact,” said Kelly McBride, Poynter’s senior vice president and chair of the Craig Newmark Center for Ethics and Leadership. “The Poynter Institute is proud to work with CPB to help newsroom leaders hone ethical decision-making and strengthen the work of their journalists to better serve their communities.”
Participants for the first cohort will be notified in June. A second cohort application will launch in early 2024 and convene in September 2024. Applicants who aren’t selected for the first cohort can apply again for the second one.
Applications for the first round of fellows for the Editorial Integrity and Leadership Initiative are due May 15. Apply now.
