PETERSBURG, Fla. (July 26, 2024) – The International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN) at the nonprofit Poynter Institute, a global leader in journalism, is now accepting applications for the second round of funding in 2024 to support fact-checking initiatives worldwide.

Starting July 26, 2024, organizations may apply to the Global Fact Check Fund, backed by a $12 million grant from Google and YouTube.

This phase, GROW 2024, aims to advance the operational capacity of organizations to scale their fact-checking efforts. The IFCN awarded $1 million to 20 fact-checking outlets in 19 countries during the previous round, GROW 2023. Awards are $50,000 per organization.

We are eager to see the innovative projects that will emerge from this new round of funding,” said Angie Drobnic Holan, director of the IFCN. “Our goal is to support fact-checkers to expand their reach and impact, inspiring new ideas and practices for all fact-checkers. The ultimate result is ensuring the public has access to accurate information.”

This project-based grant offers successful applicants funds to enhance their skills and sustainability in their regions. It’s ideal for IFCN signatories who are ready to move beyond operational support and invest in innovative fact-checking methods.

“This funding will help fact-checkers strengthen their operations and develop new strategies to tackle misinformation effectively,” Holan added.

A total of $1 million is reserved for the GROW phase, providing grants to up to 20 organizations. This round is open exclusively to signatories of the IFCN’s Code of Principles, which sets standards for accuracy, transparency and nonpartisanship in fact-checking.

The deadline for GROW applications is Sept. 3, 2024.

The IFCN network comprises 177 organizations from 72 countries, publishing in more than 80 languages. The $12 million Global Fact Check Fund aims to strengthen and develop the operational, production, and engagement capacities of local and regional media organizations over three years, increasing the quality, volume and frequency of their fact-checking activities.

The fund is currently supporting 114 fact-checking projects across 64 countries through the current BUILD, GROW and ENGAGE grants.

The next phase, ENGAGE 2024, will open applications in late fall.

The IFCN team will hold a Q&A webinar on July 30, 2024. Visit the fund’s webpage for details, and to register for the event on Zoom.
