International Fact-Checking Day 2022

International Fact-Checking Day is promoted by the International Fact-Checking Network in partnership with fact-checking organizations around the world. At IFCN, we believe that professional fact-checkers shouldn’t be the only ones debunking false information. A healthy information ecosystem requires everyone to do their part in elevating facts, since #FactCheckingisEssential.

That’s why the IFCN brought together fact-checkers from across the globe to combat disinformation around the war in Ukraine immediately after Russian forces invaded. The initiative resulted in #UkraineFacts, a collaboration that has seen verified signatories publish more than 1,000 fact-checks to counter misleading claims detected in multiple countries in the first month of the fighting. This effort follows the success of #CoronaVirusFacts Alliance and the searchable database of COVID-19 fact-checks with over 12,000 submissions.

This past year, Philippines journalist Maria Ressa, who heads verified signatory Rappler, received the Nobel Peace Prize, alongside Russian journalist Dmitry Muratov for “their efforts to safeguard freedom of expression, which is a precondition for democracy and lasting peace.”  It was the first time in over 80 years that the Norwegian Nobel Committee recognized journalists with that prize.

During this week The IFCN will be announcing recipients of the Climate Misinformation Grant Program, Global Mentorship/Mentee Program, and presenting new opportunities for fact checkers to boost their efforts to combat misinformation.

Fact-Checking Day is an annual celebration and rallying cry for more truth in public health, journalism, and everyday life. It is meant to be lighthearted, but practical.

Make sure to follow @factchecknet, and #FactCheckingisEssential on Twitter to take part in the global conversation on April 2.
