Tip

The internet can be overwhelming — but the facts are out there. Use your critical thinking skills and ignore falsehoods spread by trolls with bad intentions.

Engage with a Purpose

There is a vast amount of information online competing for your attention. And let’s get real: disinformers want YOU to boost their message. If a misleading post pops up and makes you feel strong emotions, ignore it — you have a right not to engage.

But sometimes, you can’t ignore the news. And misinformation thrives during breaking news cycles. Before sharing or commenting on a post, look it up. Use the “lateral reading” technique from the Digital Inquiry Group. Open up browser tabs and search for facts using keywords from the post. Pay attention to what credible sources are reporting on this topic.

Trolls — people online that spread falsehoods, negativity and hate — are everywhere. They don’t care about facts or having productive conversations — they will do anything to steal your attention. If someone engages in trolling, don’t give them your attention and apply both your critical thinking and critical ignoring skills.
