Dive into the role of a reporter in a 24-hour news cycle. In the scenario below you will follow a developing story and decide which details to report and which to leave out at different times of day. Remember: a viewer can tune in at any time. Some may have watched the whole story unfold while others may be seeing it for the first time. You will need to include enough details that you’ve already reported on for new people to understand what is happening but not repeat so much that viewers who have seen previous updates tune out.

Answer the questions to decide how to report this story at different times of day. You can only select three facts to include in each segment because that is all you have been given airtime for. Which three do you choose?

Look back: how did you decide what to keep during each development in the story? What was the most challenging part of your decision-making process? How do you think a viewer’s understanding of the story would change depending on when they tuned in during the day?
