Key Moments in Poynter’s Evolution
1975 – Poynter is founded as the Modern Media Institute by Nelson Poynter, owner of the St. Petersburg Times (now the Tampa Bay Times).
1980s-1990s – Poynter expands its journalism training programs, solidifying its role as a leader in ethical reporting and newsroom leadership.
2000s – Poynter embraces digital transformation, preparing journalists for the changing media landscape.
2015 – The International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN) is launched, setting global standards for fact-checking organizations.
2018 – Poynter acquires PolitiFact, the Pulitzer Prize-winning fact-checking platform, strengthening its efforts to combat misinformation.
2018 – MediaWise is founded, empowering individuals with the digital literacy skills to critically evaluate online content and distinguish fact from fiction.
2019 – The Craig Newmark Center for Ethics and Leadership is launched to develop standards and systems that promote honest reporting and build trust in journalism.
2025 – Poynter celebrates its 50th anniversary, continuing its commitment to the future of journalism.
