Jon is a faculty member at Poynter focused on boosting the impact of state and local journalism. In 2023, he launched Poynter’s Beat Academy to deliver a blend of virtual and in-person training to help journalists tackle key topics from immigration, to private equity, to political extremism, to climate change and more.

Jon has been recognized three times by the Society of Professional Journalists for his investigative and public service journalism. His work in public radio includes over a decade as executive editor at New Hampshire Public Radio and six years as a Washington reporter at NPR. Before joining Poynter’s faculty, Jon was a senior correspondent at the Pulitzer Prize winning fact-checking service PolitiFact.

He has developed training programs for journalists from across the globe, including South Korea, Sub-Saharan Africa, Kazakhstan, the Balkans and Armenia.

His work has appeared in the Washington Post, the Daily Beast, and, of course, at Poynter, where one viral piece offered the stumbling efforts of former Beatle Paul McCartney as a reassuring note for struggling writers everywhere.

Jon divides his time between Washington, D.C., and Virginia’s Northern Neck where his wife directs an historic site located on the estate of a signer of the Declaration of Independence.
