Sitara Nieves is the vice president of teaching and organizational strategy at The Poynter Institute, where she oversees Poynter’s gold-standard teaching programs, including the Digital Transformation Program and newsroom leadership training worldwide. Before joining Poynter, she was the executive director of On Demand for Marketplace/American Public Media, driving significant digital audience and revenue growth for the company, was the top editor for numerous journalism products. Prior to that role, she ran Marketplace’s newsroom, oversaw all broadcast shows, and managed significant projects with the BBC, New York Times, Frontline and others.Â
Before joining Marketplace, Nieves spent four years at WNYC, where she helped lead radio and digital strategy. She worked for The Economist, where she wrote for the magazine, and launched and edited podcasts and video series. She also taught audio storytelling to graduate students at Columbia University’s journalism school. Nieves began her career as a reporter and photographer.
Nieves is trained as a leadership and performance coach and workplace mediator, and is a certified trainer of conflict resolution. She’s a 2019 Fellow of the Sulzberger Executive Leadership Program at Columbia University, now called the Media Transformation Program housed at Poynter.
