One of Boston’s most Catholic neighborhoods is losing its last Catholic school.

Charlestown Catholic Elementary School will graduate its final class of eighth-graders in June as part of a crackdown on underperforming schools across the Archdiocese of Boston, parents said yesterday after receiving letters announcing the closure.

On Sunday, the archdiocese is expected to announce three or more closings as part of sweeping cost-cutting measures by Bishop Richard G. Lennon, who is overseeing the archdiocese until the Vatican appoints a successor to Bernard Cardinal Law. A church spokewoman declined comment yesterday, but Lennon said in an interview Tuesday that he would make extensive, painful cuts to help address a “massive” budget shortfall.

Charlestown parents seemed resigned to the news yesterday but saddened nonetheless.
