GLASSBORO — They are citizen soldiers.

All are honored, especially those who don’t come home.

On Saturday, the everyday citizens fighting for freedom overseas were honored in a community support rally at Glassboro High School, organized by borough resident Marie McEvoy.

McEvoy’s son, Cpl. Eddie McEvoy, is stationed in Kuwait.

For the past month, McEvoy has poured her energy and free time into organizing veterans, dancers and other groups for a two-hour rally to support area residents fighting in Iraq.

“Let’s never forget our veterans,” McEvoy said to a cheering crowd gathered in the bleachers. “Let’s always remember the missing, the lost.”

As she spoke, flags and yellow ribbon pins were distributed to the crowd, though many were already covered in patriotic pins.

The rally included patriotic songs, flag-waving, Civil War memorabilia and a gun salute, all culminating in a moving “Missing Man Ceremony” to remember prisoners of war and those missing in action.

During the silent tribute, one member representing each branch of the service carried a military hat, which was placed at an empty seat at a small, round table. Many in the audience were moved to tears as “Taps” and “Amazing Grace” were played for the missing heroes.

“No one is here for war,” said Glassboro Police Chief Patricia Kunchyski. “But sometimes, the price of freedom is war.”

Glassboro Mayor Leo McCabe agreed. He added that the rally served as a thank-you to those who protect America.

“This is for those who serve and those who are still serving,” said McCabe. “And we remember them always.”
