The “embedded journalist” feature of the war is paying off for an Overland Park couple with a son in Iraq.

Byron Loudon, an Overland Park City Council member, and his wife, Sandra, a first-grade teacher in Kansas City, Kan., said goodbye early in March to their son, Capt. Brad Loudon.

Since then, quotes and photographs of the soldier have appeared several times in the Chicago Tribune, and a recent Reuters picture shows him standing in front of a portrait of Saddam Hussein near Najaf.

“He looked great,” said Byron Loudon, who saw the picture Sunday. “We feel fortunate to be able to keep tabs on him through the press.”

Loudon is serving with a tank battalion out of Fort Riley that is attached to the 3rd Infantry Division. A Chicago Tribune reporter has been traveling with his outfit.
