REFORM, Mo. — Following the elevation of the national security level by President Bush and prompting from AmerenUE, the Missouri Department of Conservation closed the Reform conservation area for public use at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Unlike other conservation areas in Callaway County, the presence of a nuclear power plant within the Reform conservation area poses safety concerns in light of the impending war in Iraq, MDC officials said Tuesday.

“When the country went to the orange security level, the Callaway County Sheriff encouraged us to secure the area around the nuclear plant,” said Mike Cleary, AmerenUE’s corporate communications officers. “Because of the unique presence of the plant, we felt more comfortable closing the area off to the public.”

According to officials, the 7,000-acre land parcel likely will remain closed until the U. S. resolves its conflict in the Middle East.
