Kenneth Irby said the Fallujah footage was some of the worst he had ever seen. He is visual-journalism group leader at the Poynter Institute, a school for journalists in St. Petersburg.

“To see the disrespect for human life is difficult,” Irby said. “But, in a real way, it’s necessary to be witnessed so people can make authentic judgments and judge the gravity of the situation.”

Terrorism stories have forced media companies to address issues of taste in reporting, Irby added.

“I’m pleased to see there’s a level of caution and ethical discussion about the alternatives,” he said. “There isn’t necessarily a right answer when you’re dealing with a case like this. There is a range of alternatives.”
