But Bob Steele, a senior faculty member in ethics at the Poynter Institute, a school for journalists in Florida, warned that the use of helicopters must be judicious, because they may influence the very events — car chases, demonstrations, and hostage situations — they are covering simply by their presence.

“Journalists have an obligation to appropriately cover significant events but there’s also an obligation to cover them accurately, fairly and safely just as we cover them on the ground,” he said.
