Long-standing newspaper industry practice is to not show sources or story subjects advance copies of unpublished material, said Aly Colón, who teaches ethics to professional journalists at the nonprofit Poynter Institute in Florida. That is the rule for journalists at The Dallas Morning News.

The reason for that practice is to avoid even the appearance that outside forces are exerting undue influence over stories, especially stories that concern them.

Mr. Colón said that in recent years, an alternative philosophy has been adopted by some journalists, who advocate letting story subjects see and offer pre-publication comment on articles.

But, he said, the journalists who use that method run the risk of looking unfair if they don’t show articles about a dispute to both sides.
