Keith Woods, who teaches ethics at the Poynter Institute for Media Studies, said he understood the urge to check out a tip and get an exclusive story. But he said that wasn’t a good reason to sit on the information.


“Somebody calls up and says, ‘I know where the car of a murder victim is,’ that’s a significant tip,” Woods said.


“The public does not expect that the newspaper will be the vetting agency for that information, weeding out some calls about murders and holding on to others.”
