While many news organizations ban newsroom employees from making political donations out of a concern it could jeopardize their credibility, a journalism ethics authority at St. Petersburg’s Poynter Institute said the situation is different with a publisher.

“Publishers and general managers are the business representatives and often have license to engage in business operations in ways journalists do not,” said Aly Colón, ethics group leader for Poynter. “You have more latitude to engage in business endeavors and contributions fall in that category. But again, when people see the publisher of a newspaper making contributions, it may raise questions.”
