Even as the Internet continues to get bad PR because of some bad apples, new and useful resources keep sprouting up all over the place. An example of the good stuff is GlobalHealthReporting.org.
This free site is run by the Kaiser Family Foundation with major support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. I have been using it only for a couple of days and it is already the best way I know for keeping up
with news and information about HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis. Its well-designed and easy-to-use pages have plenty of news feeds, reporting guides, sources and more from around the world.
In addition to accessing the material on the site, you can sign up for free weekly e-mail alerts at http://www.kff.org/email.
Here are some of the other features listed in a recent press release:
- News and Events – daily summaries of news from around the world, links to new reports and webcasts from key global health organizations and a calendar of upcoming local, regional, and international events related to HIV/AIDS, TB, malaria and health journalism.
- Facts and Data – current regional and global statistics on HIV/AIDS, TB, and malaria including prevalence, incidence and mortality and other data on the three diseases.
- Country Spotlights – in-depth information and resources, recent news stories and webcasts, and key reports and data on Botswana, Brazil, China, Ghana, Haiti, India, Russian Federation, Ukraine, South Africa, Sudan, Thailand and Uganda. Data on other countries will be added on a bi-weekly basis.
- Reporting Tools for Journalists – glossaries, descriptions of medical and epidemiological terminology, reporting manuals, information on journalist training and fellowship opportunities, and multimedia resources available to help journalists cover global health issues.
Even if these are not topics you cover regularly, it’s important to bookmark this site and let your colleagues know about it.
