It’s usually not wise to put all your eggs in one basket, but there are
plenty of companies that do that in serving the newspaper industry. CityXpress Corp.,
which is a developer of a line of revenue-generating products and
programs for newspapers, especially in the online classifieds space, is
expanding out from newspapers, according to a press release that
dropped into my inbox yesterday.

CityXpress has expanded its classified-marketplace products to also
emphasize and serve the broadcast industry. The company noted how it
launched a classified marketplace for WRAL.com (Raleigh, North Carolina) this month — the first time its technology has been applied to a broadcaster’s online properties.

I’ve been wondering when this might happen. The newspaper segment
certainly is perceived to be troubled right now, even though it
continues to be a huge industry capable of supporting many vendors. And
classifieds are more than perceived to be in trouble: They are, as the
growth of Craigslist
and the emergence of Google and Microsoft free-classifieds programs
clouds newspapers’ future revenue picture. It’s only logical that a
company like CityXpress might need to think outside the newspaper box.
