The Boston Herald quotes Poynter’s Rick Edmonds:

“Rick Edmonds, a media business analyst at the Poynter Institute, said a ‘graceful exit’ for the Times might be to sell to local owners. ‘Local ownership is somewhat appealing from that standpoint,’ he said.

“But Edmonds warned that local ownership is not a cure-all for the woes the Globe and other newspapers are now facing.

“He noted that Chicago real estate mogul Sam Zell ended up buying his hometown Chicago Tribune and other Tribune holdings – only to put the entire company into bankruptcy due to heavy debt.”
