Nieman Reports
TBD.com’s community engagement team is often asked, “What do you do?” Four of them answer that question for an article in the latest edition of Nieman Reports. It is worth a read for anyone pursuing a newsroom social media strategy.

Jeff Sonderman, Daniel Victor, Nathasha Lim, and Lisa Rowan together provide an extended job description for the role of “community host” at the D.C. start-up. A typical day for the team might consist of reading, writing, reporting, coding, aggregating, coaching, editing, listening and marketing.

Sonderman sums up the approach:

“Organize it. Filter it. Present it. That’s what I do. But my job doesn’t stop there. In fact, in some ways, it’s only a beginning. Now it’s time to host the conversation that develops and invite others to join in.”

TBD is not a typical online newsroom, as it has no print edition. But, it is striking how cross-disciplinary and audience-directed the strategy is, facilitated by the digital tools and social networks at their disposal.
