Long-time CNN International Havana correspondent Shasta Darlington will open a Sao Paulo bureau for the cable news giant. It’s CNN’s first permanent step into Brazil, which will host the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2016 Summer Olympics. It’s also the 33rd international operation for the network, which last opened a new bureau in Abu Dhabi in November 2009. (CNN has 15 domestic bureaus with long simmering plans to open new ones in Columbus, Ohio and Las Vegas.) Darlington, who is trilingual (English/Spanish/Portuguese), has covered Cuba since 2006. This is her second time around in Brazil; she was based there for several years as a Reuters correspondent. Darlington will relocate immediately and be followed shortly by a full production team. Turner Networks already has a facility in Sao Paulo that is home to roughly 100 advertising, marketing and distribution employees. According to CNN spokesperson Caroline Rittenberry, the Brazil bureau announcement created a lot of in-house excitement. “We’ve got a mix of requests today – ‘Where do I send my resume?’ and ‘Can I be posted there?'”
