Roger Ebert wins the first place (large newspapers) blogging award in the Society for Features Journalism Excellence-in-Features Writing Competition. The second-place prize goes to the Washington Post staff of Celebritology. The Los Angeles Times’ Charles McNulty wins for General Commentary (large newspapers), and Lane DeGregory of Poynter’s St. Petersburg Times wins the General Feature prize in the large papers category. || All of the winners are in the release that follows.

FEATURE WRITING AWARDS ANNOUNCED

The Society for Features Journalism (formerly the American Association of
Sunday and Feature Editors) announced the winners in its 23rd Annual
Excellence-in-Features Writing Competition. The winners will be recognized
at the organization’s annual conference Aug. 24-27 at the JW Marriott Starr
Pass Resort & Spa in Tucson, Ariz.

First place winners in each category will take home a $500 check.

Entries were judged in three circulation divisions: up to 90,000,
90,001-199,999 and 200,000 and up. Contest categories included general
features, short features, features specialty reporting, general commentary,
arts and entertainment coverage, blogging, reader engagement and multimedia
storytelling.
