Christopher Braider‘s appointment coincides with the formal closure of CU-Boulder’s School of Journalism and Mass Communication. (Under a new “Journalism Plus” program, students still will be able to major in journalism as long as it’s a double-major with another academic program. The long-term future of journalism education at the school is still being discussed.) University of Colorado Provost Russel L. Moore gives these reasons for naming Braider to the post:

* “The transition from the School of Journalism and Mass Communication to a new program requires a fair-minded leader who will not be influenced by past conflicts and issues in the school.”
* “Braider has demonstrated in a number of positions at CU-Boulder that he can lead with fairness and objectivity while carrying out the many administrative tasks required to run a program.”
* He’s been on campus for 20 years.

The Department of French and Italian professor will not be directly involved in journalism curriculum design issues or teach in the department. || Earlier: CU journalism undergrads are told: Take your future into your own hands.
