Kevin Klose, who was named dean at University of Maryland’s Philip Merrill College of Journalism in February 2009, says he’s stepping down next June, and “beginning July 1, I will be fully engaged in the classroom, where the work of educating the next generation of journalists challenges us all.” Klose’s memo to colleagues is posted after the jump.

Dear Colleagues:
Today I have informed the Provost that I plan to step down as Dean of the College on June 30, 2012.
Since I began the Deanship in April 2009, we have accomplished important goals, including stabilizing our budget, modernizing curriculum, transitioning to the new building, renewing accreditation, adding tenure and tenure-track faculty. These achievements required hard work and dedication of us all – faculty, Associate Deans, Assistant Deans, and staff, and assistance and counsel from colleagues in other departments and colleges.
I appreciate the support you have given to the College, to each other, and most of all, to the students. I thank you for the support to me.
This fall’s activities include events of wide public interest and participation: the Journalism/Interactive 2011 Conference, Oct. 28-29; the 6th Annual Shirley Povich Symposium, Nov. 2; the Future of Information Alliance, Nov. 14-18. The College’s faculty and staff who are working to create these events have built essential support collaborations with many outside partners, generous alumni, and faculty and administrators from across the campus. I appreciate this effort, and I assure you I will be working with you in these activities.
It has been my pleasure to serve you as Dean. Beginning July 1, I will be fully engaged in the classroom, where the work of educating the next generation of journalists challenges us all.
