More than 200 Occupy LA protestors were arrested and removed Tuesday night from City Hall Park. Covering the arrests was a media pool selected by the Los Angeles Police Dept. in a meeting announced less than two hours before it began. The pool consisted of 12 journalists, who were asked to share reporting with each other before publishing to their own sites.
Freelance journalist and Occupy protestor Ruth Fowler blogged last night:
The banning of MSM from the scene of Occupy LA during its eviction severely inhibits the press from reporting fairly and accurately, as well as protecting Occupiers from police abuses, which are frequently deterred by the presence of the media. Last night, on the street, one of the chants heard often was “The Whole World is Watching.”
LAPD listened to that, and instantly addressed it, so that they can make sure the whole world isn’t watching.
Despite restrictions and “embargoes,” plenty of tweets and video came out of the removal. A team from the LAist live-blogged tweets and reports while LA Observed’s Kevin Roderick started the night at the police staging area at Dodger Stadium then moved back to “home base,” from where he blogged TV, radio and news reports.
Roderick reported:
Fox 11’s Gigi Graciette says on Twitter that she was one of three TV pool reporters “randomly chosen to cover arrests in park. Deal was to NOT tweet as to not have advantage over other stations.” But she complains that one reporter tweeted all night anyway.
