San Diego freelancer Tom Krasovic’s Dolphins-Chargers game story in the Miami Herald included a description of Dolphins linebacker Kevin Burnett screaming at a sportswriter for criticizing “your own team.” Krasovic told me he didn’t know the journalist’s name, but a Romenesko+ commenter identified him as Sun-Sentinel Dolphins reporter Omar Kelly (left). Which story irked Burnett? I asked Kelly. “I can’t confirm for sure, but I did include him in my weekly stock report as one of three players in the down category that week,” he writes in an email. “But truth is I’m not certain exactly what he’s referring to.” Here is what Kelly wrote:
Kevin Burnett He hasn’t done a single thing worth mentioning in the first three games of 2011, and this defense has gone from good to bad very quickly. With Karlos Dansby’s participation limited by his groin injury Burnett became the primary coverage linebacker who was responsble for defending tailbacks and tight ends. Those two positions caught 11 of the 19 passes Colt McCoy completed. What’s more troubling is the fact he struggles to shed blocks. Burnett is clearly falling short of this playmaker reputation he came to Miami with.
