ABC News White House correspondent Jake Tapper is moving to CNN. At the foot of an ABC News announcement about re-assignments in its D.C. bureau, ABC News President Ben Sherwood writes:
Jake is leaving ABC News for an opportunity at CNN. You’ll hear more about his new anchor role from his new network. For years, Jake has set the pace for the White House press corps. A ferocious reporter – and now a best-selling author – he has built a reputation as one of the most prolific and multi-talented journalists on the beat, scoring scoop after scoop. For the last three years his fellow White House correspondents have honored his work with a streak of Merriman Smith Awards for Presidential Coverage under Deadline Pressure.
Tapper guest-hosted “This Week” before the arrival of Christiane Amanpour, but when she returned to CNN (in a joint arrangement with ABC), George Stephanopoulos returned as host of the Sunday morning political roundtable. James Poniewozik wrote at the time that not appointing Tapper host was “highway robbery.” The network announced recently that Stephanopoulos would be staying on as “This Week” host through 2013.
Jonathan Karl, who becomes ABC’s Chief White House Correspondent, will be a secondary substitute for Stephanopoulos on “This Week.” Martha Raddatz, who becomes Chief Global Affairs Correspondent, is “the primary substitute.” Both are expected to appear regularly on the show.
Tapper was praised this week for aggressively questioning President Obama during a news conference:
“With CNN’s impeccable reporting during the elections and the exciting changes in the works for the network, this is a perfect time to join the CNN team,” Tapper said in the CNN press release. “I am excited about the prospect of working with both the new leadership and some old friends and colleagues.”
Tapper will be anchor of a new weekday program on CNN, as well as the network’s Chief Washington correspondent.
