Barnes & Noble
In an email to registered users of nytimes.com, the Times is offering a free Nook Simple Touch e-reader (normally $99) or a $99 Nook Color (normally $199) if people commit to a one-year e-reader subscription. With monthly subscriptions at $19.99, the Times would pocket about $140 the first year, after accounting for the device subsidy of about $100. Note the fine print:Â E-reader subscriptions include unlimited website access, but are officially separate from the digital subscriptions program. So users can’t access the full versions of Times iPad and iPhone apps. The Times also gets its $99 subsidy back through an early termination fee if a reader cancels before the one-year period ends. || Earlier: Philly papers sell tablets for $99 with two-year subscription
