Orange County Register owner Aaron Kushner plans to launch a daily paper in Los Angeles called the Los Angeles Register. He told staff of his plans in a meeting Thursday, Mary Ann Milbourn reports.
The new paper will have “not quite the heft of the Orange County Register,” Kushner said, and it will be produced by the O.C. Register’s existing staff, Milbourn reports. It will have an L.A. office, he told Milbourn.
Kushner told the Los Angeles Times’ Andrea Chang the new paper will “hire editorial staff externally and transfer some existing employees to the L.A. office.”
The paper will be distributed to the “entire Los Angeles area,” a Freedom Communications spokesperson told Wendy Lee.
Kushner did not offer a date for the new paper’s debut.
Kushner, who bought the O.C. Register in 2012, has previously expressed interest in buying Tribune Co.’s newspapers, which include the L.A. Times. His Freedom Communications purchased The (Riverside, Calif.) Press-Enterprise in November and launched an edition in Long Beach this summer.
That edition competes with the Press-Telegram, which like the Los Angeles Daily News is managed by Digital First Media.
