Toronto Councillor Doug Ford appeared before a group of journalism students Tuesday, apparently unaware his brother, the city’s mayor, was confessing to smoking crack.

Councillor Doug Ford told a class of journalism students at Ryerson University that his family had been hounded by the media, comparing the Fords to Princess Diana and journalists to paparazzi, Kim Magi reported on Tuesday in the Toronto Star. He also called the Star the “National Enquirer of the North.”

“Let’s talk about the Toronto Star,” he said. “Everyone says don’t get with a fight with people that buy ink by the barrel and paper by the ton. My theory is, don’t get in a fight with two guys that are willing to come after you and hold you to account.”

After the admission that he had, indeed, smoked crack, Rob Ford called Toronto Sun columnist Joe Warmington to continue the conversation.

And Wednesday morning, Robyn Doolittle, the Star reporter who first learned of the video, wrote about the first call she got on Easter morning and what led to seeing the video.

“If this video was real — and that was a big if — it was a matter of immense public interest,” she writes. “If the mayor of Toronto, the man in charge of the fourth largest city in North America, one of the largest governments in Canada, and a $10-billion budget, was in fact using crack cocaine, the implications were endless.”
