Every spring the tempo of journalism awards increases until the Pulitzer Prizes are announced. This year, that Twitter-crushing event will take place on April 15.
• The Society of American Business Editors and Writers announced its awards Monday (here’s the full list). Bloomberg’s properties won 14 awards, including a breaking news award for Bloomberg News’ coverage of the U.S. Supreme Court’s Affordable Care Act decision (Bloomberg terminal users got the news 24 seconds before AP pushed it out). The New York Times won nine awards, including one for its “iEconomy” series. And The Huffington Post and CNBC had five awards each; Peter Goodman’s coverage of poverty in HuffPost was among the work honored.
• Alexandra Zayas of the Tampa Bay Times won the 2013 Selden Ring Award for her series investigating children’s homes in Florida. The award usually goes to a team; Zayas is “among the few who earned it under a single byline.” (Poynter owns the Tampa Bay Times.) Here’s the series.
• The Society for News Design announced its winners over the weekend. The New York Times was honored for “Snow Fall,” The Washington Post won a gold medal for its “Homicides in the District” project and NPR was honored for “Lost And Found: Discover A Black-And-White Era In Full Color.”
• The Association of Health Care Journalists announced the winners of its Awards for Excellence in Health Care Journalism Monday. AHCJ honored Sheri Fink for her work on hurricanes’ impact on health systems, and the Boston Globe won for its work reporting an outbreak of meningitis; staffers at that paper “made what could have been a dense subject thoroughly absorbing, writing in a narrative style worthy of a detective novel,” the awards note.
• Here are the finalists for the Goldsmith Prizes, which will be announced March 5.
• The Scripps Howard Foundation will announce its award winners March 14. ASNE’s awards will likely be made public around the same time. The Nieman Foundation will announce the winner of the Worth Bingham Prize “in the spring of 2013.”
