Tom Arviso Jr. resigned as president of Unity: Journalists for Diversity Monday, Richard Prince reports.
“It has been an honor to serve as your board president for the last four months,” Arviso wrote. “However, I feel that my leadership style has not been as effective or as productive as I would like, and that has frustrated me. I have put in a lot of personal time and serious effort into carrying out the duties of the board president but I have not seen or experienced any real positive results. Therefore, rather than continue to struggle with the future of UNITY, I will step aside and allow for new board leadership.”
Unity Vice President Doris Truong will act as president until the group chooses a new leader. “Tom has provided valuable guidance in his time as UNITY president and will continue to be a resource,” Truong said in a statement.
The association officially chose its new name in January; Arviso voted to keep its old name, Unity: Journalists of Color, Prince reports. The National Association of Black Journalists left Unity in April 2011, citing financial and governance issues.
Arviso is the CEO and publisher of the Navajo Times.
