Journalist Jorge López was killed in a car accident early Wednesday morning in Brazil, according to a report from the Buenos Aires Herald. López was covering the World Cup for La Red Radio.
The 38-year old reporter was heading back to his hotel around 1.30 am when the taxi was struck by a fleeing vehicle at Tiradentes and Barao de Mauá crossing in Sao Paulo.
The taxi López was in was hit by a car with teenagers leaving a crime scene, according to a story Wednesday by Caroline Stauffer and Esteban Israel for Reuters.
Argentina’s national team, which plays the Netherlands in the city later on Wednesday in the World Cup semi-final, lamented the loss of Jorge ‘Topo’ Lopez via its official Twitter account, expressing their condolences to his wife, children and co-workers at Radio La Red and newspaper Ole Sports.
The team’s fan page also remembered López on Facebook.
Reuters reports that López is the second Argentinian journalist to die in Brazil during the World Cup. On July 2, reporter Maria Soledad Fernandez was killed in a car crash.
