Benjamin Mullin, a student at California State University, Chico, and former editor of its campus paper, joins Poynter this summer as its 2014 Google Fellow.
Mullin and 10 other students will work at journalism organizations throughout the country focusing on data-driven journalism, online expression, rethinking journalism business models and using technology to tell stories in novel ways.
The students first spend a week at Google headquarters in Mountain View, Calif., then use the remaining nine weeks of their fellowships learning and contributing significantly to their host organizations.
“I’m thrilled that Ben will be joining Poynter as our Google fellow,” said Poynter President Tim Franklin. “Ben is an extraordinary talent, and he’s someone who has a deep passion for coverage of the media. He’s proven himself in internships at major metro newspapers and as the editor-in-chief of his student newspaper, and he also has Web development and design capabilities. I’m confident that he’ll make an immediate, positive impact on Poynter.org.”
Mullin is completing his bachelor’s degree this spring with a double major in English literature and journalism. He serves as a correspondent for USA College Today and has freelanced for several publications, including Poynter.org.
The fellows each receive $8,000 and a $1,000 travel budget from Google. More information on the fellowships is available on the Google Fellowship pages.
