Journalists Glenn Greenwald and Laura Poitras will return to the country on Friday, Michael Calderone reported Thursday in The Huffington Post.
Greenwald and Poitras, currently in Berlin, will attend Friday’s Polk Awards ceremony in New York City. The two journalists are sharing the prestigious journalism award with The Guardian’s Ewen MacAskill and with Barton Gellman, who has led The Washington Post’s reporting on the NSA documents. Greenwald and Poitras interviewed Snowden last June in Hong Kong as he first revealed himself.
In an interview with The Huffington Post, Greenwald said he’s motivated to return because “certain factions in the U.S. government have deliberately intensified the threatening climate for journalists.”
Greenwald and Poitras are founding editors of The Intercept, along with Jeremy Scahill. The Intercept debuted in February.
On Monday, the Pulitzers will be announced and, according to Calderone, “it is expected that reporting on the NSA, one of the biggest stories of the past year, will be honored in some capacity.”
In February, Poynter wrote about the possibility of a shared Pulitzer for both The Washington Post and The Guardian, where Greenwald and Poitras reported on the NSA.
