A few U.S. papers are among the 29 finalists in the Society for News Design’s contest for the World’s Best-Designed Newspapers. Among them:
- Washington City Paper, in the non-daily, circulation of 175,000 and over category (WCP Editor Mike Madden says the paper doesn’t print that many papers)
- The Buffalo News, in the daily, circulation 75,000-174,999 category
- USA Today, in the daily, circulation of 175,000 and over category
Washington City Paper, where I was once managing editor, usually only makes news for its design when it ticks people off (example, example). Kind of a nice change! City Paper already got an Award of Excellence from SND for its June 7, 2013, “Gay Issue.” Here are a few recent CP covers, courtesy Madden:
Here’s the Buffalo News’ front page from Monday, courtesy the Newseum:
And in case you’ve forgotten what USA Today looks like, here’s its Monday front page:
And a couple articles on its redesign:
- USA Today unveils new redesign
- USA Today’s new design debuts in print today
- New USA Today website ‘very, very influenced by iPad design’
- USA Today changes print typeface after readers complain about new design
