Brianna Snyder, a senior editor at the Albany (New York) Times Union has clarified a post that notes the strong jawline and sculpted brows of a man arrested on suspicion of armed robbery.
Titled “Is this our own Hot Mugshot Guy?” the post compares a photo of Damien Sierra-Rodriguez, who has been charged with robbing a General Nutrition Center, with that of Jeremy Meeks, a felon whose mugshot was praised widely after he was arrested during “a gang sweep in Stockton.”
Here’s the clarification:
Note: I’m hearing a lot of concern from people here and I want to clarify something really important: This post is not about excusing the criminal actions of a violent man. And it’s certainly not an attempt to undermine his bad act. When we saw Damien Sierra-Rodriguez’s photo, we thought back to Jeremy Meeks, and the way there’s a funny incongruence when you see someone who’s conventionally good looking doing a terrible thing. That incongruence — and the way good-looking people do better in life in this world — is what this post is about. It’s a joke. It’s ironic. It’s not an invitation to acquit a person’s bad actions. I think most readers know that. But for those who don’t, that’s the deal.
The post, which was published last week, notes that a jawline such as Sierra-Rodriguez’ is hard to attain “without some kind of supplement.”
Some kind of a vitamin pill that makes your jaw look strong and more angular. Vitamin K, I’m pretty sure that’s it. And so what if he “threatened an employee with a loaded shotgun.” What do all those words even mean when you’re faced with brows as sculpted as “Damien Sierra-Rodriquez”‘s.
