Last December, the Pulitzer Prizes announced a change in the breaking news category: Coverage didn’t have to be from a local publication.
“Breaking news entries will now include coverage related to news events of consequence, whether they are produced by a local, state or national news organization,” the announcement reads. “The award goes to the story, or series of stories, that capture events accurately as they occur and also expands on the initial coverage."
On Monday, staff of The (Santa Rosa, California) Press Democrat won the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for breaking news for its coverage of last year’s wildfires.
Finalists included one other local newsroom and one national newsroom: The Houston Chronicle for its coverage of Hurricane Harvey and The New York Times for its coverage of the Las Vegas mass shooting.
This year, local newsrooms won prizes in six of the 14 categories.
