The rapid evolution of artificial intelligence requires that communicators, journalists and anyone who works with words, images and multimedia educate themselves about the technology’s inner workings, its potential pitfalls, its many ethical considerations and its possibilities for regular use. 

Join Poynter faculty and AI expert Alex Mahadevan as he leads you through a series of video lessons designed to help you understand and harness the power of AI. You’ll consider its use cases, potential problems and ethical scenarios in lessons designed to help you make smart decisions when it comes to producing and editing content. Mahadevan will help you come to a better understanding of:

  • What exactly AI is, and some useful definitions
  • Who is — and who should be — using AI
  • The most useful tools currently available to communicators
  • The perils and potential pitfalls of this emerging technology
  • What ethics to consider and how to disclose them to audiences 

Participants will walk away with a better understanding of what AI is, how to use it, what to be wary of and how to communicate its use to audiences.

This asynchronous course takes about 90 minutes to complete. 

It consists of readings, videos and activities designed to improve your editing skills.

You can go at your own pace. Your progress will be recorded.

The course culminates in a 10-question quiz. To pass, you must achieve a score of 80% or better (eight or more correct answers). You must complete the quiz in one sitting. You cannot pause or come back to it, but there is no time limit on it and you can take it as many times as needed to pass.

This course is part of the Poynter ACES Advanced Certificate in Editing. While the Introductory and Intermediate certificates are not prerequisites, it is recommended that you complete them before you start the Advanced Certificate.

You can take this course independently, without enrolling in the Advanced Certificate learning path.
