Nearly $2 trillion will be hitting states for the next several years via the American Rescue Plan (ARP). This free data journalism workshop series will empower local journalists to follow this once-in-a-generation influx of funds, hold local authorities accountable, and spur smart societal change through storytelling.

There will be three hands-on workshops in this series:

Public health and pandemics: Tuesday, March 29, 2022

  • The ARP includes billions of dollars in funding to recruit and train public health professionals to respond to COVID-19 (including the new ​​Public Health AmeriCorps), prepare the U.S. for future outbreaks, and support local public health officials. How is this money filtering down to your community? How are private and public entities working together to implement the right solutions?

Public safety, policing and beyond: Tuesday, April 12, 2022

  • The ARP includes additional federal funds that could be used to invest in community-based approaches to public safety, such as Medicaid funds for mobile mental health intervention services and housing funds that can be used to reduce homelessness. How are local public officials prioritizing public safety needs in your community? What are the opportunities?

Infrastructure and environment: Tuesday, April 26, 2022

  • The ARP includes billions of dollars for localities to make necessary investments in water, sewer, or broadband infrastructure, while also providing millions of dollars in grants to identify and address environmental injustice. How is climate resiliency factored into public debate on these topics? What voices need to be heard?

Each workshop will be 90 minutes. The first 30 minutes will provide an overview of the topic and feature an engaging discussion with local reporters. Participants will then be sent to small breakout sessions with other journalists in their region for 45 minutes of hands-on coaching and data work. The final 15 minutes will be a large group Q&A.

There are three focused workshops in this online series. Participants may apply for the series and attend all three workshops or attend only the ones that are most relevant to their work. The workshops will be recorded, but we encourage participants to attend live to get the most out of the hands-on data breakout sessions. The workshops will take place:

  • Tuesday, March 29 at 2 p.m. Eastern time (public health)
  • Tuesday, April 12 at 2 p.m. Eastern time (public safety)
  • Tuesday, April 26 at 2 p.m. Eastern time (infrastructure and environment)
